A-Sun Wu was born in the town of Luodong, Yilan County, Taiwan. He is now an internationally renowned artist and sculptor.

Education - The Twists and Turns of a Difficult Childhood as a Crucible of Life
A-Sun came from a family of farmers. His childhood was difficult. At Tamkang High School at age 19, he began studying painting with Chen Ching-hui and discovered his talent for art. He redoubled his efforts toward his creative work, his determination showing a passionate dedication to life. He later attended National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), studying in the Department of Fine Arts. His academic performance was outstanding throughout, and he duly received three invitations to represent Taiwan at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil. After finishing university, he continued his education in Spain, graduating from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. In 1992, he decided to set up a studio in Paris.

Establishing a Style - Travelling to Find a Creative Niche and to Develop Character
The response to A-Sun's initial work in Japan was hugely positive. However, searching for new breakthroughs, A-Sun decided to travel around the world to seek creative inspiration. Over the years, his explorations brought him to Central and South America, Africa, Brazil, and the South Pacific. Influenced by primitive art, his personal style began to be defined by the geometric patterns of abstract expressionism. His works have been shown in Taiwan, the US, Canada, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, and China, all to enthusiastic response. He has also received many honors including selection as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Taiwan, the Wu San-lien Award, the National Award for Arts, the Paris International Young Artist Award, and the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

Rediscovering Life's Origins in Africa
A-Sun's style is strong and intense, creating works of great power with the simplest of brush strokes. In particular, the masks used in African dance and the sacred fetishes of African tribes were elements that often appeared in his work during his African period, lending those works a primal and vital energy. His style also reflects his views on life. He believes that passion is the only way beyond the ordinary. He once said: "If you're not passionate about art, you shouldn't be an artist." For him, there is no such thing as burnout or exhaustion. His boundless vitality is always on show.

New Realizations and the Search for Perfection
2003 was a turning point in A-Sun's life. A few years prior, he had been diagnosed with cancer. In fighting the disease, he realized that life was limited and unpredictable. In his first exhibition after his cancer went into remission, he publicly burned 50 paintings that he was not satisfied with. After that, he became even more active in showing his work overseas, hoping that the entire world could see his art. The following year, he held an exhibition of his work in Russia and became the first Taiwanese artist to have their work shown in St. Petersburg's Marble Palace. His uncompromising and determined dedication to his work and to the ideals of art, and his eternal drive to surpass himself, are the hallmarks of A-Sun's attitude as an artist. His works have entered the collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art, the Hakone Open-Air Museum, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vilafames Valencia, and the National Museum of Andorra.

Innovations in Ink Wash Painting--the Wild Ink Series' Debut in XUE XUE
In recent years, A-Sun has lived in Taiwan and France, holding solo exhibitions in both countries. He began ink wash painting in 2012, blending Western abstract art and traditional Eastern aesthetics in his works. New technologies and his own realizations on life form the basis for his new and contemporary interpretations of ink wash painting. In 2014, A-Sun depicted the unique life and mystical atmosphere of China's Mt. Huangshan in ink wash. Under the name "Wild Ink," these works are making their debut at XUE XUE WHITE.
